How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I need?

Everybody always wants to know how many acupuncture treatments will they need. And unfortunately it’s a bit of a loaded question. Like most things, acupuncture often takes time and builds on itself. You can compare it to taking medication. More than likely, you have to take those for weeks or longer to see change and sometimes you have to keep tweaking your dosages to get it right.

Acupuncture takes consistency and commitment to see the benefits. It is not uncommon to be healing health issues that have been going on for years and this process takes time. Most often you will need 6-8 treatments to begin seeing consistent change. When I first started seeing an acupuncturist, I committed to 6 months of treatments and noticed major improvements after 3 months.

Please remember, you are an individual and everyone is different! Our treatment strategy will always be led by how you feel after each treatment. So at first you may need to come in 1-2 times per week, depending on your health goals, and we will re-evaluate every few weeks to assess your progress. And go from there!

Here are some general guidelines for how often you might have to come in for treatments:

  • Acute conditions: 2 sessions per week for 3-4 weeks

    • This includes recent injuries with swelling and inflammation, severe pain, colds or flu, and any condition that interferes with your ability to easily get through your day.

  • Chronic conditions that have recently flared: 1 session per week for 6-8 weeks

    • This includes most autoimmune conditions, PCOS, endometriosis, migraines, IBS, stress and anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, musculoskeletal tightness and pain.

  • Chronic conditions that are now stable and need to be maintained: Every 2 weeks for 6-8 weeks

    • This includes stress, anxiety, insomnia, hormonal and menstrual support, PMS, poor digestion, occasional diarrhea or constipation.

  • Preventative care and general wellness: Once per month

    • Think of this as a tune up! Coming once a month continues to support all the work you have put in. These treatments help keep your body and mind in balance so you can continue thriving!
